Our mission is to encourage every individual in healthcare and all healthcare related organizations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area to affirm the Charter for Compassion, to enculturate the value of intentional compassion through education and training opportunities, and to encourage use of the Golden Rule as the operating principle in all healthcare activities.

In a very complex, large healthcare system as exists in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, intentional compassion becomes critical to optimal health of the community. With volume and intensity of healthcare needs and expectations, healthcare worker burnout and frustration by those needing the healthcare system are realities.

Therefore, paraphrasing the words in the Charter for Compassion, we urgently need to make intentional compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our Dallas/Fort Worth healthcare system. We need to transform our healthcare worker mindset to one of intentional compassion to self (the worker), to others (those with health care needs and expectations), and to the healthcare culture and society at large.

1. Seek opportunities to brief CEOs, Medical Chiefs of Staff, and Nursing Directors of healthcare facilities in the Dallas/Fort Worth area on the Charter for Compassion and to encourage affirmation.

2. Increase awareness within healthcare organizations of opportunities to learn more about what is compassion and how to become more intentional with knowledge of the value of compassion in our relations and responsibilities with others.

3. Encourage Dallas/Fort Worth healthcare workers and organizations which have affirmed the Charter to explore the opportunity to participate in the International Global Unity Games held annually from September 11th – September 21st, the International Day of Peace.

Lucy Barker, RN BSN is a full-time Operating Room nurse who works in the DFW area. In her spare time, she enjoys caring for her two teenage sons and socializing with colleagues and close friends. Volunteering has always been an important part of Lucy’s life and has devoted her time and talents to causes such as Equest Therapeutic Horseback Riding Programs, Dallas Medical Reserve Corp, and handing out “Hard Hats for Little Heads”, a program that distributes free bike helmets to needy families each year. Lucy’s daily mantra is to live, laugh, and enjoy life to the fullest with compassion.
