In Search of Justice: Mexican American History Is American History
November 14, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Our final program for 2016 will add another dimension of our general theme for 2016, “Owning Violence: Affirming Nonviolence.” Dr. Roberto Calderón, an expert on Texas-Mexican history, will bring our focus to the Texas Mexican population.
As we have learned about the lived experience of African Americans, American Indians, and Muslims in our society, this presentation will deepen our understanding of the experience of Mexicans as a perceived “other.” We will continue to try to take an unflinching look at ourselves in relation to those who are different from us. Together, from the perspective of our respective cultures and faith traditions, we will reflect on the varied forms of violence in relation to the Mexican population – overt and subtle – and how we can with greater clarity and consistency truly be people of nonviolence.
Dr. Roberto Calderón is Associate Professor of History, University of North Texas. His primary academic interest is in American Mexican history and he has a deep understanding of the history of Mexicans in Texas.
